5.3 Card detection with CDI and CDO pin
As specified in the CFAST specification 1.0 the CDI is
connected to a controller input pin.
If V_CDI is more than 0.6V larger than Vcc a current flows
through the internal ESD diode and supplies the
controller with an undefined voltage.
For better card detection all CFAST cards produced after
January 2011 have CDI connected with CDO.
5.3.1 Positive card detection
Without CDI-CDO connection V_CDO is about 1.0 V for
R_i=100…400 Ohm.
With the new CDI-CDO connection for a serial resistance
R_i=50 to 400 Ohm V_CDO is between 2.1 and 1.5V.
If Vcc pins are not connected R_i should not be smaller
than 50 Ohms because the current via the CDI pin and
the diodes increases and the internal controller
structures could be damaged.
Recommendations
If a voltage switch/regulator with a positive enable
CE pin with the circuit above is used, the enable pin
should detect a max high level threshold
V_High,min=0.8V for the old and
V_High,min=1.2…1.8V depending on R_i (see diagram).
To limit the CDI current below 7 mA and have a
significant voltage V_CDO, R_i should be between 200
and 400 Ohm
R_o should be a weak pull down resistor (~100kOhm)
to prevent a floating ENABLE signal, depending on
input properties of the switch/regulator.
To prevent current through the CDI pin (if
V_CDI>Vcc+0.6V) Vcc should be always connected to the host connector.
If there is no reason, Vcc could always be connected to 3.3V.
5.3.2 Inverted card detection
If a voltage switch/regulator with a negative enable – CE pin is used, R_o should be weakly pulled up and CDI
should pulled down to ground. So CDO is low, if a card is plugged in and the pull up current through the CDI/CDO
lines is limited. If the card controller detects a low level at CDI, it switches CDO completely to ground after 0.4s.
This card detection only work with the new cards with connected CDI/CDO (if no Vcc is applied). With applied Vcc
it also works with the old cards.
5.3.3 Alternative card detection
Alternatively a ground pin of the host connector (e.g. PC2) could be used as card detection. This pin should be
pulled up weakly. If a card is inserted it will be connected to ground.
